Elevation: From 5050 feet on the plains to 14,345 feet at the peak of Mt. Blanca.
Major Highways: I-25 north and south; U.S. Hwy 160 west; Hwy 10 east; and Hwy 69 to Gardner and Westcliffe.
Nearest cities: Pueblo is 47 miles north and Trinidad is 37 miles south of Walsenburg
Climate: 4 seasons. Winter highs 48. Lows 19 Fahrenheit Summer highs 91 Lows 58 Fahrenheit
Cities: Walsenburg is the county seat. LaVeta is 17 miles southwest of Walsenburg. Cuchara is 15 miles south of LaVeta Gardner is 27 miles northwest of Walsenburg.
County population 8,000 people.
Economic factors: Spanish Peaks Regional health and Colorado State Veterans Nursing home. Huerfano County School Districts, RE-1 and RE-2. The County and Cities are also responsbile for many jobs in the area. Agriculture is a mainstay with ranching the foundation. The original economic base was coal mining but all of the mines closed down by 1972. At one time, there were 50 mines. Remnants of the coal mines and camps are still evident throughout the county.
